Investment

An alpaca farmer can expect to harvest fleece and make a return on his/her investment through sales of offspring. The value of alpaca fleece is the economic basis for the future market of alpacas. There are a number of fiber cooperatives in North America. Our domestic fiber is partially distributed through the cottage industry market place (knitters, weavers, On the Hillfelters, hand spinners, etc). The fiber usually sells for around $4 to $4.50 per ounce. Most alpacas yield between 3 to 8 pounds of fleece per year. Selling fiber can offset your expenses; having a farm store is also a wonderful to market your animal's beautiful fleece which can be displayed and used in so many ways.

The alpaca industry is currently based on the sale of quality breeding stock. Females usually reproduce to approximately 15 years of age, giving birth once a year. Therefore, potentially compounding your initial investment many times over. Factors that are influential in the pricing of an alpaca are color, country of origin, fleece quality (density and fineness), sex and age. The range of value for females is currently between $10,000-50,000 and males average between $7500.00-30,000. The initial costs of a start-up herd as well as equipment and property improvements are all tax deductible. Please refer to AOBA for further information on the benefits of alpaca ownership and investment.
